Main Focus:

Screening: This hospital screens every new mother after delivery for the eleven risk factors for postpartum depression. If scores are at high risk, then a consult by a Perinatal Nurse Specialist is conducted and a stepped up level of care is initiated. Medication management and referral to therapy is coordinated and a follow-up phone call is placed. Medical Social Work consultation is placed as well. Those currently suffering with mental illness are also screened with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the score is reported on the medical record and to their physician. To date, over 34,000 new mothers have been screened.

Spectrum Health Healthier Communities Outreach Department, PPD Support Group: Support group to mothers and families weekly that is free and facilitated by a PPD Nurse Specialist and Licensed Therapist trained in Perinatal Mood Disorder treatment. This group has been in existence since 1993.

Informational Packets and Speakers Bureau: Informational packets are available and sent to those who request additional information. A Speakers bureau is available with experts who present on a multitude of topics related to PPD.
