Main Focus:

  1. MIHP is a benefit for ALL Michigan women with Medicaid health insurance who are pregnant or who have an infant.  Intended to promote healthy pregnancies, good birth outcomes, and healthy infants, MIHP is essentially a case management program that supports regular prenatal and infant care provided by the medical community.
  2. MIHP services are delivered through home and clinic visits by a multidisciplinary team that includes a nurse, social worker, nutritionist and infant mental health specialist.  For each MIHP participant, the MIHP team:  a) Conducts a comprehensive risk assessment across multiple domains, including Health Risks, Smoking, Alcohol Use, Drug Use, Stress, Depression and Mental Health (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale), Social Support, Abuse/Violence, Basic Needs, Breastfeeding, Infant Development, and Infant Health and Safety; b) Develops a care plan; c) Facilitates and monitors implementation of the care plan, including referrals to community services.  All MIHP participants are educated about perinatal depression.  Participants who screen positive for depression are referred for clinical assessment and provided with ongoing support; d) Provides educational interventions; e) Coordinates services with medical care providers and Medicaid Health Plans; f) Provides access to transportation to medical appointments, WIC, substance abuse treatment, childbirth and parenting education classes.
